Education in the Age of
Alternative Truths

A provocation worth reading twice — still relevant, unfortunately

If we are to prepare future generations for this new age of alternative truths, do we need to inject a new essential questioning element into the whole of the educational process?

It is frightening to consider that educators should explain that they teach the current version of the truth and that there are many others rewriting new alternative truths.

Educators traditionally have encouraged students to question third-party 'truths' but to treat their own teachings as the 'real' truth.

Do we need to inject, right from the start, more of an element of 'what I teach or say may be true — you must question it'?

Sadly the resultant situation would be the creation of increasing uncertainty and doubt throughout the educational process. Is this now necessary?

Do we need for everything in the educational process to be questioned with greatly increased rigour in the age of alternative truths?

Do we need, right from the start of the educational process, to place more emphasis on rigorous examination and questioning?
